It’s very seldom that you’re blessed to find your equal… I’m just kidding. A little Beyonce reference. Tee-hee. However, it IS very seldom that I get my hair braided (that includes twists). Every year, typically right after my birthday, half past Homecoming, I go into hibernation. I typically reemerge like a monarch back into society in late April. Like clockwork, I am a bear in the wilderness. This season is my hibernation season. #CozySeason

I have gotten my hair braided three times in the past three years. And that came with a huge leap of faith because it had literally been YEARS since I last got my hair done. Braids were never my most favorable look, especially since my frame and face shape were very different at the time of my constant protective styles. I got my first weave sewn in 8th grade prior to the 8th grade dance, I discovered clip-in extensions & wore out my early Amazon Prime account circa 2009, and when my wig collection masterfully developed, there wasn’t any looking back for me.

However, I cut my hair September 2018, and I mean really cut it. I had a shape up, and everything. That meant I had to get serious about my protective styles if I ever wanted my hair to grow back. Which, eventually, I did. I also use these styles these days as a way to put my head down and be serious. When my hair is braided I want to go out less because I’m not mixing and matching outfits with wigs in my head. Plus, I can get out of the house and stay on the run a lot faster (especially with a nice eyelash extension).

This time around I wanted a style that was light, a little boho chic, and versatile… AND DIDN’T TAKE TIME. I finally learned what the name of this new found style was that took over social media, and it seemed like the right fit. Passion twists it was. The young woman who I knew I wanted to do my hair, when the time was right, was suddenly out of the hair braiding game (of course), so that set me back a bit. I took to Google, as any late millennial would, and found a salon about 2 miles away from my house. I was early, and received a complimentary wash and dry (her October special).

We didn’t waste time. She began braiding exactly on time, and it only took four hours. PLUS, I was the only one in there. I wasn’t susceptible to basic, nightmarish cable shows, loud phone calls (if you know, you know), nor any other possible distraction that may have presented itself to my hair braider. It was a quiet afternoon where she and I both sat and watched Transformation Church sermons. That was it! After that, she helped me put the little jewels in my hair, took photos, and sent me on my way! I’m enjoying the style so far, and I hope it will last me until Thanksgiving, if not, longer!
