LED NOT BY FLESH.
I wake each day with a grateful heart because of the power God gave me to live my purpose. I’m Obianuju. I’m Juju, I’m Ju, and I’m Uju on most days, but each day I am a child of God. I am a daughter, sister, aunt, god-mother, and proud mommy of two kittens. During my busiest weeks I have 2-3 events, and speaking engagements, yet even when sleep is scarce, I count my blessings, twice.
At least, once a day I remind myself that there was a time that I prayed, cried, and stayed up all night waiting (read: working) for the life I have now. I remind myself that this is exactly where I wanted to be, and God has plans for me. Through my business we focus on “events with a purpose.” My hope has always been that we can re-present God’s purpose through means of fellowship and enrichment. By that, we create events of advancement, scholarship, and culture for the minority. We’re creating a network of people who will continue to open doors, reach back with an extended hand, and be voices of the voiceless. It’s through Christ that I am inspired to move forward, and it is through His word that I am compelled towards each event and program.
It’s not easy, and perfection is rare, but God doesn’t look for perfection, He looks for progress. I pray that whatever is on your heart right now, can be elevated to the Most High, because that little mustard seed of faith is all we need to start exactly where we are. It is possible to use your current situation to propel you to your next one.
As for me, I used my background of computer science as a gateway to the world of technology. Before I even had a thought about event planning, my focus was in the digital space. I built websites, did photography and videography, covered events, and wrote. If I couldn’t do anything, I could always write. I furthered my repertoire by developing the skill of graphic design, and I took advantage of my interest in social platforms by diving headfirst into the analytics of it all (this was before Instagram and them started providing us with metric for free! lol.).
I was never too big for an opportunity, and I always had a grateful heart when work came my way. It wasn’t until my first year at Howard, when I was working during a panel at Homecoming that I heard one of our panelists, Karen Civil, explain how she was not given a seat at the table for her field, and she soon realized that if she wanted to be in a room with these individuals, she would have to make the room herself. That was it for me. For those of us who are not offered a seat, I created a table.
It’s not always obvious, and our journey isn’t always straight (it’s very circuitous, honestly), but when you’re living in your purpose, you feel it. I feel that with each JJE event. The connections and confidence that is fostered with each person touched means enough for me, for a lifetime.
I leave you with this: One of my favorite sermons.
